Business Succession Planning is very similar to a Relay Race. Are you and your business relay ready for succession?

The Start

The Start

Imagine a relay race. It is a brisk fall morning about 8:00am. The runners are waiting in anticipation, hearts beating, minds focused toward success…

Finally, Boom! Each runner bounds from the line and begins running as fast as they can around the track. This race is a team effort requiring precision. The first runner out of the block needs to set the pace and build a foundation for his fellow teammates. This runner has put in tireless hours of physical and mental training and is now pushing to perform at his highest ability and is preparing for the transitions ahead. With successful transitions with runners two and three they have proved their dedication and have built upon the foundation set by the first runner.

The Race

The team has fought hard and with the final transition looming in the distance, all teammates await that final exchange. The final runner has put in tireless hours of physical and mental training and is waiting at the line in anticipation for their time to shine.

The runners have practiced and planned for this transition over and over again to make sure it is as quick and seamless as possible. In a close race, this is where the race could be won or lost. In order for the transition to be effective, both runners know that each of them need to be moving at the same speed to prepare for a successful exchange as one is letting go of the baton and the other is taking over responsibility.

Business Succession Planning is very similar to a relay race. One has to be willing to let go of the baton at the same time one is willing to take it and run with it. Just like the athletes running the race, the foundation for Succession Success requires teamwork, preparation, a purposeful exchange, and a dedicated support team.

Completing the race necessitates dedication to each of these four factors.
